Serisha Azaria Moodley ...
From the Runway to the Courtroom
The following is a segment from the above article in Rocci Women Magazine of August 2015:
Where did it all begin for you?
On a stage! I absolutely loved the performing arts for as long as I can remember, whether it was acting or modelling, both of which I pursued professional. The courtroom became my stage.
What inspires you?
People who live with passion and are fearless and unapologetic in achieving their dreams. And of course inspiring literature. I am a voracious reader.
How do you maintain balance between being a wife, motherhood and your career?
I have a simple rule: I am fully present in whichever hat I wear.
What motivated you to pursue the legal field?
Law gave me a platform to have a voice with a purpose. I was also and natural and logical career choice, taking in consideration my Libran personality (seeing Justice and Balance), articulate nature and strong leadership skill.
How difficult was it for you to carve a space for yourself in male dominated environment?
Difficult indeed. Being a man or woman in South Africa is significantly linked to other social relations such as race, class, ethnicity and religion. So, there were certainly many barriers on the journey, more so being a woman!
Do you think the business environment still favours males or do you think enough transformation interventions have been implements to accommodate woman?
I think that we have come a long way from the perception that “a woman’s place is in the home” but that the business environment still does favour males. Transformation takes time.
What advice do you have for aspirant young women in your field?
Hard work and discipline are two very defining factors of successful people. They are certainly non-negotiable, but ultimately faith that you will be exactly where you are meant to be.
What further interventions are required to empower women?
A quality education that is free and skills development.
Are there any other initiatives and/or programmes that you are involved with?
I currently provide seminars to the property market industry regarding various legal aspects relevant to their respective field. I serve to empower the industry in general, however the majority of these individuals are women.
How would you like to be remembered?
A true inspiration, especially to my daughters.
